Man, excellent Total Fest. All kinds of stuff we can't get out of our heads. Like how Thrones doesn't need a bass to make the wildest music out there. Or how much we like Dead, and Brain Tumors. And Mr. Dad. And Benjamin Von Wildenhaus. And Seawhores. It's a little ridiculous to try to sum up in a single place, frankly. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the bands that played and lent gear to one another (especially Brothers of the Sonic Cloth and Dog Shredder), the folks that volunteered, the businesses that sponsored us, and you the folks who came and raged.

Hey, let's keep the momentum going! Lots of us put on shows across the other 362 days of the year, and we have some incredible ones coming up this fall in Missoula. Here are some spots to learn about them:

QUIT YOUR DAY JOB: TOTAL FEST WELCOMES BACK BRAIN TUMORS

If you were lucky enough to catch Brain Tumors at last year's Total Fest, then you know the chaos that this four-piece throws at you. Brain Tumors rages through some of the brashest, venomous, feedback-riddled, ass-kicking hardcore to come out in the past few years. Another band that calls Minneapolis home (what's up with the Twin Cities?), they (Drew Ailes, Patrick Dillon, Joel Gomez, and Dan Johnson) direct all of their pissed-off, sarcastic, loud, unrelenting, primal energy at everything they encounter.

That's enough, for me.

But, they don't stop there. They're straight-up performers (which sounds like a slight, but it's not). They seriously do not give a shit - everything, including themselves, is fair game. Take a glance at the tour blog, Hardly Human. It's hilarious from top to bottom, with nothing (bands, labels, bars, people, parking lots, water fountains, food, dogs, etc.) escaping Drew's scathing eye. In spite of things getting under their collective skin, Brain Tumors maintain a tongue-in cheek attitude that helps keep them fresh and entertaining. It's awesome loud, pounding stuff that doesn't allow you to be comfortable, but it also doesn't allow you to take your angst too seriously. Sure, the world is a complete mess, but walking around pissed off gets you nowhere. If you can't take the time to laugh at yourself, then you have no right to the mantra "Fuck YouForever."

2012 Begins Now

We've been promising this for a few weeks. Apologies for our delay.


We received an overwhelming number of great submissions this year. A few evenings spilled into a handful of marathon listening sessions, followed by days of talking through the crazy amount of talent that came through the submissions inbox. By no means is it a perfect system, but we, here at Total Fest, feel like we've come up with an awesome, well-rounded line-up that will get your blood moving. We have a limited amount of slots, and we're saddened by some of the bands that we have to leave out of the festival. It's tough, but it's a welcome problem to face. Thank you to everyone that put their hat into the ring. Submitting to a festival can be a tough, cold process, and we hope that we add a little more of a human element to things. We appreciate all the support  that you give us. Although it seems trite at times, it simply cannot be said enough -- Total Fest does not and cannot exist without you.


Lamentations aside, we're frickin' stoked about this year. We have approximately 45 bands lined-up, and there's not an out in the bunch. It's rewarding to see this come together, and we hope you'll erase that pencil and solidly ink in your travel plans for the 16th-18th.
A few changes: We'll be posting more as the days go by, but, unlike previous years, we'll throw-up a dozen or so bands at a time and follow-up with some write-ups and general musings on individual bands. So, without further ado here is the first installment for Total Fest XI:
